Shower curtain rods can do more than just hold up your shower curtain
They can add space and comfort to your shower experience
Shower curtain rods no longer have to be straight and metallic in color. Decorative shower curtain rods are now available and you can finally start getting creative with the design you choose for your shower rod. In the past, most rods came in the basic metallic color, now you can purchase rods in chrome, copper, brass, bronze, nickel, coated colors or install a plastic over layer which comes in numerous colors. Also, you no longer need to just be satisfied with a straight rod as new curved rods, providing far more space in your shower, are now easily available.
Types of Shower Curtain Rods
Most bathtub - shower combinations generally require a shower curtain rod to support the shower curtain. There are a number of things you may want to consider when looking at shower rods. The first thing you should decide is - are you looking for a permanent or removable shower rod? Shower curtain rods can be secured to the wall permanently with screws which end up putting holes in the wall if you want to change it. More popular are tension shower curtain rods which use a spring to exert a force on the wall such that the rod stays up.These rods can be removed at any time and should not leave any screw holes.
The next thing you may want to consider is what style of rod you want. While the straight shower rod is still the most common, curved shower rods are starting to be seen in more places. The big advantage of a cresent or curved shower curtain rod is that it allows for more room in your shower. These rods bow out in the center allowing you up to about one foot of extra elbow room. If considering this option, make sure you measure the width of your shower curtain such that it matches the length of the curved shower rod.
There are a number of other shapes on the market which you may be interested in as well. One polpular design is the circular or round shower curtain rod which is useful for a bathtub in the middle on the room. Also available are the following shapes: oval, U, neo angle, rectangle and a L shaped shower curtain rod. Pictured above in the slide show you can also see a bendable shower rod which could come in handy if you have a difficult job to do or if the dimentions just don't seem to match the type of rods on the market. Finally, if all of these choices are not what you are looking for there are manufacturers out there who build custom shower curtain rods.

Shower curtain rods are generally round and are made of metal. To provide a wide variety of colors, a plastic cover can be used. These plastic covers come in a number of colors and while their main purpose is to change the color of your rod, they can be used to cover up rust which develops on some of these metal rods.
Finally, if you are looking to spruce up the look of your bathroom you may want to consider a dual or double shower curtain rod. When using this type of rod, you can put an inexpensive water resistant curtain or liner inside while using a more luxurious but non water resistant curtain on the outside.
