Fabric Shower Curtains

Fabric shower curtains offer you a range of patterns and styles

A fabric shower curtain liner will keep your curtain dry

Fabric shower curtains are made of many different types of materials such as natural cotton, linen, denim and hemp as well as synthetic polyester, nylon and vinyl. Each of these shower curtains has advantages and disadvantages.

Any shower curtain which is made with a natural fabric will generally require a liner to keep it dry and free of mildew.

Elegant Fabric Shower Curtains

Fabric  shower curtains made of linen, denim or cotton are made of natural fibers and provide a light feel, can easily be washed and have a whole earth type of appearance. The main disadvantage of natural fabric is that it is not water repellent and as such generally requires a fabric shower curtain liner to protect it from getting wet. If not dried properly, many cotton shower curtains can become infected with mildew.

Hemp shower curtains are made of hemp which is a naturally occurring fiber which can be grown and processed essentially free of pesticides. It offers some level of natural anti fungal and antibacterial retardation as long as it is properly treated. For people who are looking to maintain a chemical free household this may be the natural choice. A fabric shower liner may be required here but is not necessary if the hemp shower curtain is properly maintained.

Waterproof fabric shower curtain

Polyester is a common man made fiber which provides some level of water resistance, is easily machine washed, is relatively inexpensive, comes in a wide variety of colors and styles and is relatively maintenance free. While a shower curtain liner can be used it is not required. We have used a polyester shower curtain for over ten years and it is still functioning like the day we bought it. A shower curtain made of nylon would have essentially the same attributes as a polyester curtain.

Finally, what is generally considered the least expensive option are the vinyl shower curtains. Vinyl gets its softness from all of the additives that are added to it. If you are looking for a chemical free shower curtain you should not be looking at a vinyl shower curtain. Like the polyester and nylon curtains vinyl is easy to look after, is water repellant and generally can be machine washed on a gentle cycle.  One of the main advantages of vinyl is that it can be completely transparent.  Newer curtains on the market have a vinyl window near the top of the curtain to add extra light into the shower.

To get you started, as to what is on the market, take a look at these fabric shower curtains.  Before deciding on which type of fabric to go with you should think about the level of maintenance each curtain requires.
